In the book on good to great, Jim Collins speaks about two teams on an expedition to reach the Artic circle. One team does 25 miles every day no matter what. Rain, snow, bad weather, good weather – They do 25 miles every day. The team mates want the team leader to do more than 25 miles on a good day but the team leader knows the importance of discipline. In contrast there is another team that does 75 miles on a good day. Because of putting too much strain the next day they cannot do the same amount so they tend to do a little bit less and rest. You can guess which team would be successful in their quest !
The only thing about workout to remember is that the workout does not feel good when you do it. It always feels good after you do it. Another way to motivate yourself is to do running in a treadmill in your house. How can you motivate yourself with a treadmill in your house?
What I have done is that I have made a collage of pictures of my family. That includes my children, my wife and my parents. When I am jogging on the treadmill I look at them and I know that I have to keep fit for them. That is enough motivation for me to continue running on the treadmill for 40 minutes which is all that is required for you to remain fit.
How to build up a discipline and increase motivation
What if you have never run before. How can you get from a couch potato to someone who can do 40 minutes running ?
The answer is with discipline. If you have a treadmill you can start your first day by just walking at 3 miles an hour for 40 minutes. The next day you can do at 3.5 miles an hour. The following day you can jog every 9th minute for just one minute and the rest of the time you can just walk for upto 40 minutes. The day after you can jog every 5th minute. Once you are comfortable with that speed you can jog every 3rd minute. Day in and day out with discipline and small increments you can run the entire 40 minutes in no time.

Crash diet is not recommended because the body’s response in this type of crash diet is to first use up its carbohydrate stores (known as glycogen) in the liver and muscles. Hence because water is stored with glycogen in the body, you tend to lose weight quickly however most of this loss will be water and muscle. And because muscle burns more calories than fat, even when you are not doing any physical activity, if you lose muscle you would end up slowing the rate at which your body burns calories resulting in slower metabolism.
